In Nomine: Detroit

Overview

History

The Arsenal of Democracy, Motor City, the 3-1-3… no matter what nickname its given, the name of Detroit conjures visions of progress, industry and, often, dilapidation. The eleventh most populous city in the US, it’s both a majestic city with bustling commerce and tourism, and an empty city of decay and degradation. The only city in the United States that looks south to Canada, Detroit is a city unlike any other city in the United States.

Detroit was founded by the Frenchman Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac in 1701 and named Fort Ponchartrain du Dtroit. Built to keep the British from moving west of New England and to monopolize the fur trade in North America, the area has been one of constant violence and renewal. Even as the young settlement was being fought over between the French, Native Americans and British soldiers, the Host and the Horde squabbled for control of the domain. Its position along the Detroit River made it an ideal settlement, and where there can be a dense population of people, there is great opportunity for celestial growth.

In 1760, in the midst of the French and Indian War, British troops gained control of the settlement and shortened its name to Detroit. The area became part of the United States in 1796, under the Treaty of London of 1794. In 1805, only a river warehouse and brick chimneys were the only structures to survive a fire which ravaged the settlement. Rebuilt, it became the capital of Michigan in 1805, but fell to the British during the War of 1812. It was recaptured by United States troops a year later, and returned to its city status in 1815.

By the late 1800’s, Detroit had emerged as a transportation hub, built upon shipping, shipbuilding, and manufacturing industries. Industrial growth and commerce made it a home for the working man and millionaire alike. In 1896, Henry Ford built his first automobile and founded the Ford Motor Company eight short years later. Detroit became the world’s automotive capital and its growth skyrocketed.

Once the fourth largest city in the United States, gangs, riots, racial tensions, and recession drove the affluent out of the city through the 60’s and 70’s. In the 1984, the city’s rebirth was injured again as rioting in the wake of Detroit Tigers’ World Series championship caused millions of dollars in property damage, leaving many wounded and three dead.

Since the 1990’s the city has had a revival, especially the downtown area. The rise of casinos, new stadiums, a river walk, and upscale hotels and condos has made the city a beacon of tourism–though surrounded by abandoned neighborhoods and slums. It is Detroit, a city of hope and nightmares alike. It is Detroit, a city of angels and demons.

The War in Detroit

Some areas seem to lack the climate which forms Tethers easily, while others offer the possibility for Tethers to form constantly. Detroit falls into the latter category, with potential Tethers always on the horizon, though often weak and unstable. However, the availability and potential within these Tethers (however temporary they may be), make it a valuable prize for every Superior. At any given time, there may be as many as 50-70 celestials in the city. However, because most of these prizes are short term, there are few Word-bound inhabitants and only a handful of angels and demons actually make Detroit their “home base.”

Even though Detroit is not considered as important as Chicago or New York, its geographical location–especially its proximity to Windsor–and rapid Tether development cycle keep it in the forefront of the War and makes it attractive real estate for most Archangels and Demon Princes, regardless of their goals.

This attraction of both pro-War and pro-Stalemate Superiors has made for an usual political climate. While skirmishes often occur–especially over potential tethers–there are just as many alliances shared between the Host and the Horde (especially between pro-Stalemate sides). Both Dominic and Asmodeus, having formed uneasy alliances many times themselves, take careful watch over the city and, as such, it can be unwise for any celestial to cause a major disturbance or provoke too much trouble for any side.

Because of the activity the city generates, it’s not a quiet town. The daily lives of a city with such a dense celestial population means there are small, constant, Symphonic ripples. Detroit shares a similar level of background noise Disturbances that many active cities like New York, Boston or London have. While this allows celestials a certain amount of autonomy in their actions, as most small disturbances are ignored, one can never tell who is actually listening and the dense movement of Symphonically aware beings means trouble could always be lurking around the next corner.

While all Superiors maintain a presence in Detroit, very few Archangels or Princes visit it directly. Detroit is largely governed via trusted officers and seneschals of the dozen plus Tethers scattered throughout the city. Currently, both the Host and the Horde each boast five strong Tethers in the Metro Detroit area, as well as numerous burgeoning and dying Tethers.

Getting Around Detroit

Public transportation use and fuel prices have both seen rises over the past few years, but an automobile is still the primary method of transportation for most in the Detroit Metro area. Detroit does offer numerous accessible means of mass transit. Within the city proper, busses are run by the Detroit Department of Transportation to the edges of the city and, from there, passengers can access the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation’s commuter bus system to the surrounding suburbs. Additionally, an automated guideway transit system known as the People Mover loops through the downtown area in a one-way circuit. However, it is rarely used and has been criticized for a deficiency in number of stations.

Politics

Archangels

Blandine (Dreams)

When Detroit’s River Walk opened in June 2007, Blandine gained a strong tether to her Tower–offering her a tide of Essence and strength she hadn’t had in the city since the late 50’s. As well as the River Walk’s Menuite seneschal, Elisa, there are generally a few angels of Dreams in the Detroit area, attending to dreamers and (more often) helping others escape nightmares.

Christopher (Children)

The Archangel of Children has no direct foothold on the city, but tries to keep a servitor or two in Detroit at all times. These angels are directed by a Cherub named Brody who is focused on improving the lives of the children and rarely involve themselves in other activities.

David (Stone)

David is one of the few Archangels with a relatively minor presence in Detroit. While the city is Tether-prone, the Tethers don’t have the staying power that the Archangel of Stone prefers. He recognizes the city’s importance to the War and will send an angel there to help protect it or assist other angels, but, overall, the Word of Stone is not as strongly felt as other Words.

Dominic (Judgment)

As well as an aging Tether and a dedicated saint representing him, Dominic has at least one Triad in Detroit at all times. The Seraph Archangel is aware of the cooperation between some angels and demons and his servitors are often sent there to watch for signs of Dissonance and discourage any fraternization with the enemy.

Eli (Creation)

While the angels of Creation aren’t given much instruction from their roaming Superior, Eli still has a power-base in Detroit. Kit, the Angel of Motown, generally has a few angels assisting her. Additionally, angels of Creation come to Detroit just to learn from and assist Ea, seneschal of weakening Michigan Theater Tether.

Gabriel (Fire)

Gabriel sees Detroit as a haven to cruelty and still feels the burn from the corruption of her word during the popularity of Devil’s Night. Motor City generally has a few angels of Fire hunting the cruel within it, but there are no official representatives or long-term Detroit inhabitants of Fire. Even the Detroit Soldiers recruited by Gabriel’s angels seem to burn out or fade away.

Janus (Wind)

Wind’s angels aren’t able to stay in one place for very long, but Janus loves to pass through Detroit. It’s a city of change and motors, and he hopes his angels are able to shake things up while there; to change things for the better. Of course, what’s better for Heaven doesn’t always feel immediately better for humans–but they’ll learn. One of his Seraphim, Jedediah, tends to spend much of his time in Detroit and it’s Canadian sister-city of Windsor and can be called upon when trouble arises.

Jean (Lightning)

Home to Henry Ford and workplace of a young Thomas Edison, Jean shares a special relationship with Detroit. While most of the innovations and inventions in Detroit are predominantly automotive in nature, this is no less important to the Archangel of Lightning than it is humanity–which has formed a strong bond to cars. Jean thinks it important that humankind find more efficient ways of powering their cars and his angels are instructed to closely watch and support the race to cleaner, renewable energy sources. Henry Ford’s Mack Avenue Workshop is one of the city’s stronger and more reliable tethers and is maintained by the Mercurian of Lightning, Thaddeus.

Jordi (Jordi)

Unsurprisingly, Jordi has the same contempt for Detroit as he does for every other man-made city. Unlike most man-made metropolises, though, the rapid decline in population in the 70’s has allowed nature to begin making its home in some unlikely places. It’s not uncommon to find coyote lurking in some of the less densely populated Detroit neighborhoods and the rare coyote may even be seen in downtown proper. While this is primarily animals doing what animals do, Jordi’s angels are encouraged to keep the wildlife safe. The Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge has also become a tether to the Archangel, where it is closely guarded by a Malakite of Animals (often in a large dog vessel) named Rrrogh.

Khalid (Faith)

While predominantly Christian, metropolitan Detroit is home to a number of faiths. Boasting one of the largest Arab American populations, there are many Mosques and temples of various structures of faith to be found in Detroit. Khalid has angels in place within the population, but thus far, the only two buildings of worship to acheive Tether status belong to Laurence and Asmodeus.

Laurence (The Sword)

Laurence sees Detroit as a potential sword for the Host in the Midwest, it just needs to be polished and buffed. Though one of Heaven’s first Tethers was corrupted and taken by The Game, Laurence believes that having both a tether to War and The Sword can soon push the forces of Hell back.

Litheroy (Revelation)

Recently Shamshiel, Angel of Daylight and one of Litheroy’s most powerful angelic servitors, has declared Detroit her next “project.” Secrets hide everywhere and Litheroy agrees with the Elohite that there are some things in the 3-1-3 that need to be exposed as quickly as possible.

Marc (Trade)

The Mercurian Archangel of Trade loves Detroit like only a Friend of Man could. Though other Archangels (and sometimes Princes) managed to grab prime Tethers formed in the 1920’s faster and more aggressively than he could, Motor City has been good to his Word. Likewise, Marc always keeps an eye on the city. He was disapointed by its economic downfall in the 80’s, but sees it starting to build again. Though he may still not have a Tether, he always makes sure there’s an angel or two in town to help keep the idea of fair trade.

Michael (War)

Michael saw Detroit’s rise in Hellish factions and helped to push The Horde back. Through his Tether at the Michigan Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument he helps coordinate with The Sword to forge Detroit as not only a stage to push back Hell from Detroit, but from the Midwest.

Mihir (Friendship)

The young Archangel of Friendship doesn’t have a strong presence or foothold in Detroit–but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t want one. Angels of Friendship are encouraged to help humanity build both ties of friendship and hope in Rock City.

Novalis (Flowers)

Novalis has always helped maintain Detroit, in whatever way she could. Tethers have been grown and trampled just as quickly underfoot, but she clings on to life there in every way she can. Cranbrook Gardens, Detroit’s oldest manor home, is home to her newest, burgeoning Tether.

Tamiel (The Deep)

Detroit is not one of Tamiel’s largest concerns. In fact, it’s barely on her plate at all. One of her Soldiers, Emma Marie, lives in Ann Arbor (a nearby city) and can be called upon if requested. The Deep’s status in Detroit, however, is minimal.

Yves (Destiny)

Though there are no strong, direct ties to Destiny in Detroit, Yves works with many of the other Archangels to promote the wellfare of the city.

Zadkiel (Protection)

Though the Archangel of Protection doesn’t have any direct presence on Detroit, she wants it protected from falling to its prior state. Any angels in the area are expected to assist senior angels of Flowers, Fire or Trade.

Princes

Abatha (Madness)

The Habbalite Princess of Madness either doesn’t want a strong foothold in Detroit or is using it as a control experiment. She has no direct influence on Detroit at all and servitors have been discouraged from traveling there.

Alaemon (Secrets)

Like the Archangel of Revelation, Alaemon believes there are secrets buried deep within the Arsenal of Democracy. Unlike the Seraph, however, the Prince of Secrets want the knowledge of those secrets–then wants them buried further, where they can never be found. There may be a demon or two skulking about Detroit at any given time, but he’s never mentioned any names.

Andrealphus (Lust)

Over the last few decades, Adrealphus has found Detroit a little to industrious and gritty to be of use. Since the Host has regained a strong foothold, however, he sees possibility in the city once again. While he doesn’t have any powerful servitors in the region, he knows of Detroit’s affinity to Tethers and it’s not unlikely that he seeks a foothold in the re-growing Metro Detroit area.

Asmodeus (The Game)

In the 1910’s, Asmodeus displayed is craft of The Game as he overthrew Heaven’s largest Detroit-based Tether (partially by corrupting the Seneschal), gaining all access to it and its high income of Essense. As well as the Tether and its “new” Seneschal, Kafkefoni, Asmodeus keeps a few demons in the Detroit area to watch for any Renegades or potential problems. He also has a human soldier within the police force to keep him appraised of both human and celestial interventions.

Baal (The War)

Though The Prince of War doesn’t have a Tether or a senior servitor in Detroit, he does keep a few demons around. Not only does Asmodeus’s Tether see a lot of action, but angels having become more prominent again in the past decade and the Prince of War sees no reason to let their activities continue. If he can gain power in the 3-1-3 and, better yet, take Michael and Laurence down a peg or two, so much the better.

Beleth (Nightmares)

Servitors of Nightmares hide in Detroit’s shadows, fighting against the rise of hope and Dreams. Though Beleth doesn’t have a specific power center or servitor in Detroit, she hates the fact that Blandine has gained a powerful Tether and instructs her servitors to aid the allies of Nightmares to reduce Humanity’s aspirations for the city once more.

Belial (Fire)

At its lowest point in history, Detroit had a powerful Tether to fire, thanks to the incidents which took place every October 30th: Devil’s Night. The Tether itself isn’t as powerful as it was, but Belial still wants to see Detroit, and everyone in it, burn. His servitors are often sent to aid Maiphiat, Calabite of Fire, Demon of Devil’s Night, his Tether’s Seneschal.

Fleurity (Drugs)

When Hell “ruled” Detroit, Fleurty’s Word thrived. Drugs provided the illusion of escape for the masses and they kept coming back. Though there have been significant crackdowns on the market, Fleurty still has a strong presence there. Along with his Tether, various demons of Drugs pass through the city regularly.

Furfur (Furfur)

One of the newest members to Hell’s pantheon of Superiors, Furfur, Prince of Hardcore wants a foothold in Detroit. How could he not? It’s Rock City, baby! His Word is already supported through the city, in small doses, but it’s not enough. His servitors are instructed to amp it up wherever they can, so the city can be his.

Haagenti (Gluttony)

Haagenti would love to gobble up the domains controlled by Drugs and Greed, but doesn’t really have anyone in the area equipped to do so. One of his servants, Morthis, Demon of Syrup is currently in Metro Detroit, so perhaps it’s only a matter of time before Detroit is one of Gluttony’s main courses.

Kobal (Dark Humor)

The Prince of Dark Humor will occasionally send his servitors to Detroit, but has no official presence there. However, the city is starting to become too full of light again–it’s starting to stand on its own–so maybe it’s about time to lay down the proverbial banana peels to let it slip and fall again.

Kronos (Fate)

Kronos has a weak Tether in Detroit and servitors who enter Detroit are expected to serve his Word as per normal. Detroit has a Fate and it was nearly reached, but the Prince appears to be biding his time before bringing the city down again.

Lilith (Freedom)

A small Tether to Freedom once existed in Detroit, but it was burnt down in the fires of Devil’s Night. She seeks revenge for the parties responsible, but her actions towards that end are subtle and slow. Free Lilim can sometimes be found throughout Detroit collecting Geases and cutting deals–especially after the sun sets.

Malphas (Factions)

Thanks to the 12th Street Riots in 1967, Malphas gained an endouring position in Detroit as one of its top dogs. The Prince is quick to capitalize on any race or religious factioning and (like Dark Khalid) also uses the atmosphere created by the destruction of the World Trade Center on September 11th to fuel fueds and his own Word.

Mammom (Greed)

It’s not Las Vegas or even Reno, but gambling has taken hold in Detroit and Mammom managed to gain a new, strong Tether in one of Detroit’s first casinos. Mammom is one of the few Princes who wants to see Detroit rise again, at least to become strong enough to pull in even more money and Greed.

Nybbas (Media)

At its lowest, Detroit, was excellent territory for Media. Not only did many stay home to do nothing but watch TV, too scared to leave, but the city was excellent fodder for movies, news stories and production of scandalous music. These days the city is boooring. It’s old news, baby, and it’s high time it was brought low to better boost the ratings.

Rahab (The Seas)

Though positioned on Detroit River, Rahab has little to no interest in Detroit. His servitors are not positioned there directly, but, thanks to the river, demons of The Seas can move freely about much of the city without worrying about invoking Rahab’s Dissonance condition.

Saminga (Death)

Detroit’s first murder also helped form a Tether to the Saminga’s realm. That, however, was long ago. Like everywhere else, the Prince of Death seeks nothing more than the death of life in the city. No specific actions are being taken within the city to achieve that end, however, and while servitors of Death may be in Detroit, none are of note or great prominence.

Valefor (Theft)

Not only were cars prevalent in Detroit, so were (and are) carjackings. Valefor is one of Detroit’s major players, though it’s difficult to tell exactly where the Calabite plays. His major tether (it’s believed he may have a few through the city) is a warehouse on 152nd Street, where stolen cars are processed. To Valefor, of the nicer things about the increase in the Host’s precence is that there are more things to steal–but it’ll be a lot nicer when the city is stole from them again.

Vapula (Technology)

The Prince of Technology has never quite managed to gain a Tether in Detroit, but he still has a good foot in the city. Angela, one of his Balseraph Dukes has been in Motor City for a few decades now and any discoveries made by a servitor of Technology are to be reported directly to her.

Tethers

The Detroit area is rife with potential and minor Tethers, but most of the potential sources of Essense don’t seem to last long. They just don’t seem to “stick.” Some Superiors, however, have managed to gain a steady source of power in the Detroit area. And, while there may be any number of small, temporary Tethers to Heaven or Hell at any given moment, listed below are the Tethers that matter. Because of the tenuous nature of Detroit Metro area Tethers, many of the minor gateways to the celestial realms do not have Seneschal, and only a handful of Seneschals are Word-Bound to their Tether.

The Host

Assumption Grotto Catholic Church (The Sword)
Seneschal: Kendra, Seraph of The Sword
Assumption Grotto Catholic Church is the second oldest Catholic church in Detroit. The church serves as a community leader, place of worship and is Michigan’s home to the Knights of Columbus. While the church is a strong Tether and a shining example for Laurence, it’s actually The Sword’s second major Tether that was founded in Detroit. The first, Saint Anne’s Church, was corrupted by Infernal forces in the late 1800’s and eventually was turned into a Hellbound Tether. Kendra, Seraph Seneschal of Assumption Grotto strives not only to make her post a beacon of light in Detroit, but also to ensure that what happened to Saint Anne’s doesn’t happen here.

Cranbrook Gardens (Flowers)
Seneshal: Lael, Ofanite of Flowers
In Bloomfield Hills, a northwest suburb of Detroit, resides Cranbrook Gardens, Metro Detroit’s oldest surviving manor home. Cranbrook founders George Gough Booth and Ellen Scripps Booth commissioned the finest artisans, craftsmen and studios of the period to furnish the house with handcrafted furniture, tapestries, tiles, stained and leaded glass, and other works of fine and decorative art many of which can still be seen on tour today. The house itself is surrounded by 40 acres of well-kept gardens. Even at its busiest, the gardens can bring a sense of ease and peace to all but the hardest human. The tether itself isn’t that strong, but its loved by Lael, Chief Gardener and Seneshal and is often used for angelic meetings.

Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge (Animals)
Seneschal: Rrrogh, Malakite of Animals
The first International Wildlife Refuge in North America, the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge was bound in December 2001 and quickly became one of the strongest Tethers in the region. The refuge includes islands, coastal wetlands, marshes, shoals, and riverfront lands along 48 miles of the Detroit River and western Lake Erie. The Tether itself is deep within one of the larger islands of the refuge. The refuge is protected from threats by Rrrogh–which roughly translates to “Dog who runs with wolves.” He doesn’t often have to deal with humans, but when he does they can call him “Charley.” While the Tether provides a strong supply of Essense to Jordi, it isn’t often used by any angels who don’t serve the Archangel of Animals.

Detroit River Walk (Dreams)
Seneschal: Elisa, Menunite of Dreams
A young Tether, the Detroit River Walk was opened to the public in June 2007. The river walk runs five and a half miles along the river, from the Ambassador Bridge to Belle Isle, and is decorated with park benches, piers and pavillions. Added to the city’s riverfront, the river walk not only brings hopes that Detroit will host the Olympics in 2020, but also of overall revitalization. It’s a symbol of bright dreams for the city and, if cared for, may have the potential to be the city’s strongest Tether. The Seneschal is Elisa, one of the few Meununim to ever hold such a high position.

Guardian Building (Judgment)
Seneschal: Cochmael, Cherub of Judgment
Cochmael was originally the Seneschal of the Wayne County Building, which was established as a Tether to Dominic’s own seat of Judgment in 1902. The Tether was running smoothly and fairly and Cochmael was confident in his position. Then, in 2007, it was decided that the county needed more room for its proceedings and moved to the Guardian Building. The Tether, which was thought to be stable, moved with the city and, in a sudden and nearly unprecedented case of Word-shift, Cochmael moved with it. The move crippled the Tether and put its Seneschal into a state of shock, but the Cherub believes that, with time, it will return to full strength–barring too much Infernal intervention.

The Henry Ford (Lightning)
Seneschal: Thaddeus, Mercurian of Lightning
Henry Ford, longtime friend of Thomas Edison, brought high ideals of consumerism, combining assembly-line mass production with high wages. This philosophy came to be known as Fordism. The Henry Ford museum in a western suburb of Detroit not only displays the ideals of Henry Ford, but also his collection of history and items which sparked imagination and change, often for the better. When the Tether first appeared it wavered between many domains before angels of Lightning stabilized the Locus to Jean’s Cathedral. A strong Tether, it is tended to by the Mercurian, Thaddeus who, amongst his duties, also offers tours to both tourists and visiting angels alike.

Michigan Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument (War)
Seneschal: August, Kyrotate of War
In the heart of downtown, situated within the traffic circle of the intersection of Woodward Avenue, Michigan Avenue, Monroe Street, Fort Street, and Cadillac Square, is the Michigan Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument. Established in 1865 and stabilized in 1866, the monument is one of the oldest Tethers is not only amongst the strongest, but is also the oldest Tether in Detroit’s volatile and sporadic Tether history. This is, in part, due to August, a Kyriotate who helps convince the population to keep it updated and relevant. Even while Infernals seemed to own the city, the monument stood mighty–much to the chagrin of Hell’s forces. There have been many attempts to destroy the Tether, but, as of yet, all have remained unsuccessful.

Michigan Theater (Creation)
Seneschal: Ea, Elohite of Creation
Commissioned as a concert hall/movie house in 1926, the massive Michigan Theater has changed hands and purposes many times in the past 82 years. It’s served its original purpose, but has also been a nightclub, rock stage and even hosted a hockey game! Partially demolished in 1976, the Tether lost much of its strength, especially when converted to a parking garage. Ea, its Elohite Seneshal managed to save much of the ornate structure to inspire parkers, but also arranges clandestine youth rallys, such as raves and rap face-offs (as seen in the movie “8-Mile”), keeping the Tether intact and a haven for new types of Creation–however hindered.

Plum Street (Dead Tether to Flowers)
Ex-Seneschal: Jubal, Malakite of Flowers
In the mid-1960’s, during the height of the “Flower Power” movement, school teacher Robert Cobb sought to create the Midwest’s version of San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury, a Mecca for the hippie movement. Purchasing property in a small neighborhood outside of downtown Detroit, Plum Street was created and, for a while, Novalis had a massively powerful Tether in Detroit proper–specifically on the corner of Fifth Street and Plum Street, the gateway to this arts-enthusiastic, peace loving community. In just a few short years, though, the Tether was taken down blow by blow, in police harassment, drug use and, finally, it was shattered on July 23, 1967 in what came to be known as the 12th Street Riot. The Malakite Seneshal, Jubal fought hard against his Tether’s destruction, but was unsuccessful. Dead Tethers in Detroit, are not uncommon, but Jubal–unlike most Ex-Seneshals–still remains, trying to rebuild the Tether before he fades away and refusing to set aside his duties.

The Horde

152nd Street Warehouse (Theft)
Seneschal: Lucrecia, Lilim of Theft
Nestled in one of Detroit’s warehouse districts is a Tether to Theft. In this particular warehouse stolen cars are brought in and “processed.” As well as being a chop shop, it’s a haven and hang-out for a small circle of thieves and miscreants and is one of the most secret Tethers in the area. Even the few angels of Janus who enter the place (to fence their own stolen goods) realize it leads straight into Valefor’s section of Hell. This is partially due to the Lilim Seneschal, Lucrecia cashed in a number of geases and got into debt herself, to buffer its presence from celestial detection. Not even many demons know of the place and Lucrecia likes it that way. If you know about it, you can use it for shelter or to get rid of hot items. Beware, though; everything at the 152nd Street Warehouse comes at a price.

Berberen Party Store (Fire)
The tradition of Devil’s Night predates the 1940s, and was a night of mischief and mild criminal behavior. Corz, Demon of Devil’s Night served Kobal well, promoting humor at the expense of everything else. All until the 1970’s, when Belial’s strongest Tether in Detroit was brought on by an escalation of Devil’s Night acts to include arson. When Devil’s Night was associated more with arson than petty vandalism, the Seneschal of Berberen Party Store–a building ravaged by the fires of arson–decided that he needed to include the night itself into his being if he wanted a Word. The Calabite Maiphiat destroyed Corz, petitioned for and was granted the Word Devil’s Night. Over the years, the Tether has been weakened by both human and angel-led crackdowns, but still sustains a steady supply of Essence to Belial, especially on October 30th.

Hobby Bar (Factions)
Seneschal: Della, Djinn of Factions
In the late 1960’s a speakeasy was raided by vice squad offices and, due to racial and economic tensions of the time, turned into one of the most destructive riots in history. The 12th Street Riot of 1967 resulted in 483 fires, 231 incidents reported per hour, and about 1800 arrests. As well as being the turning point to the downfall of Novalis’s Plum Street Tether, it also created a Tether to Factions, on the spot where a black man was shot by a white police officer in the midst of the events. These days, history of the riots keeps the tether strong and its Seneschal, Della, simply serves beer. Its all she needs to do.

Kercheval Korner Store (Drugs)
Seneschal: Sam, Balseraph of Drugs
During the 1980’s the Chamber Brothers Gang heavily involved in the distribution of crack cocaine in the Detroit Metro area. One of their larger distribution facilities was at an unassuming convenience store, which, eventually, formed a weak Tether to Drugs. The eventual bust of the gang only strengthened the Tether, thanks to achieving national recognition. It was boosted again President Bill Clinton used the incident in part of his denouncement of former first lady Nancy Reagan’s anti-drug policy. The store has changed ownership and management a few times over the past two decades, but, to update its relevance, crack cocaine and other drug sales have once again resumed their place in the corner store, thanks to its Balseraph Seneschal, Sam.

Michigan UFOs Organization (Fate)
Seneschal: Bagdal, Impudite of Fate
The headquarters of the Michigan UFOs Organization is in the basement of Ted Burgley. It’s also where a server message board sits, a message board that gets over one hundred thousand hits per day. In some places, this wouldn’t be enough to form a Tether to anything. But, in Detroit, a Tether nexus, some demons of Fate managed to help push the organization over the edge and help form a Tether, which Kronos utilizes. The Seneschal, Bagdal, has replaced Ted Burgley and manages not only monthly meetings in the house, but also a centralized network of people fascinated with the idea of aliens–so fascinated that they are kept from their Destinies and, if properly motivated, steered toward their Fate.

MotorCity Casino (Greed)
Seneschal: Joy, Habbalah of Greed
MotorCity Casino was one of the first casinos built for the purpose of revitalizing Detroit. Completed in 1999, the Tether could have stabilized in any number of places, but was steered towards Mammom’s Bank, as people were offered big wins and large takes. Many of the initial casino visitors sacrificed much of their time and priorities as they went on streak after streak, and, in their greed, forgot the classic adage: in the end, the house always wins. Run by the Habbalite Seneschal, Joy, MotorCity Casino fulfills multiple purposes. Not only does it act as a Tether, fueling Greed, but it also gives Mammom a nice cut of the final winnings.

Saint Anne’s Church (The Game)
Seneschal: Kafkefoni, Shedite of The Game
One of Heaven’s biggest losses and Hell’s best triumphs in the Midwest in the early 1900’s was the corruption of Saint Anne’s Church. One of the first buildings constructed in Detroit and the first house of worship, Saint Anne de Detroit was once a Tether to The Sword, slicing hard into the heartland of Ethereal Tethers. Then, about 200 years later, when the church was no longer the only Catholic church in town, a pastor began to play the game–the game of numbers. Concerned with a dwindling audience, and, therefore, dwindling cashflow (due in part to seeds of thought planted by a young Shedite by the name of Kafkefoni), he began focusing on the large Italian immigrant population. And, in deft manuevering by accidental human hands and purposeful demonic hands, the church was silently corrupted and its Seneschal was slain. Now, Saint Anne’s Church focuses on the Hispanic demographic, but it still plays the numbers gain. And the Shedite that helped start it all is still around, rewarded with a position of Seneschal.

The Marches

Belle Isle
Seneschal: The Snake Goddess of Belle Isle
Northeast of downtown Detroit, at the edge of the Detroit River Walk lies Belle Isle. Unbeknownst to most celestials, it is home of the Snake Goddess of Belle Isle and the last Ethereal Tether in Detroit. The island itself is well-cultivated and includes a botanical garden, zoo and wide-ranging park space. Sometimes picnickers on the island will encounter a beautiful white doe, they report the doe shyly observes them from behind trees and brush, but when approached bounds off. It’s said that just as the doe disappears from sight, she transforms into a beautiful Native American maiden. Deep in the heart of this island, far from prying eyes, worship of the Snake Goddess still occurs by ancestors of Chippewa and Ottawa Native American tribes. Tribute is payed to all their gods and, for the Snake Goddess, and those that were not purged by Uriel’s Crusade, Essence is received.

Characters

Angelic

August, Kyrotate of War, Seneschal of Michigan Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument
The Domination and Seneschal of War’s foremost Tether in Detroit, August is also a major liason for angels looking to fight evil. Using his inherent abilities as a Kyriotate, he not only defends his post but also helps keep the Tether strong by sparking conversations about war and honor.

Brody, Cherub Friend of Children
Brody holds two Roles in Detroit, one as an employee at a small daycare center and the other as a lifeguard at a public pool. Though known by most of Detroit’s angels, he rarely involves himself in any events that don’t directly concern his Superior’s Word–he feels that he has enough to do, keeping the children of the city from having to grow up too quickly. If anyone asks if they can provide him assistance he’ll always have quite a few suggestions.

Cochmael, Cherub of Judgment, Seneschal of Guardian Building
The recent Tether transfer has left its Seneschal Guardian a little shaken and confused, but Cochmael has, little by little, begun to regain her feet and enthusiasm in her duties. As well as managing the Tether, the Cherub is also the primary go-to angel for servitors of Judgment in Detroit, be it to receive instruction, advice or assistance.

Ea, Elohite of Creation, Seneschal of Michigan Theater
Ea’s assigned Tether has been steadily weakening over the past few decades and her primary concern has been keeping the building relevant to Creation. As such, she rarely has time for most other concerns, but she will fulfill any of her required duties as Seneschal without complaint. Followers, allied and associated angels of Creation in the area who need to work off Dissonance are encouraged to do so at Michigan Theater, as the Elohite can always use support in organizing events in the parking garage.

Elisa, Menunite of Dreams, Seneschal of Detroit River Walk
Menunim rarely aspire to or achieve such vaulted positions as Seneschal, but Elisa is a rare Messenger. She strolls along her Tether, the Detroit River Walk, in one of three vessels, both subtly spreading hope and dreams, as well as ready for an assault on her assignment. Like most Menunim, she doesn’t interact much with celestials–and only subtly interacts with humanity, as befits her choir–but she can be of help if fellow angels request it.

Jedediah, Seraph Vassal of The Wind
Jedediah is Heaven’s premier acquisition specialist in Detroit, Windsor and their surrounding areas. If an angel needs something–be it weaponry, relics or another angel–Jedediah can generally either lay his hands on it and deliver it or knows someone (who knows someone). While the energetic Seraph is useful in obtaining the hard-to-get, calling on him also means he’ll generally but into the angel’s business and take over for a couple days–at which point he’ll get a call to be elsewhere, leaving the angel with both the goods as well as whatever plans the Most Holy had already begun.

Jubal, Malakite of Flowers, Ex-Seneschal of Plum Street
In the tumultuous Tether town of Detroit, only a handful of Seneschals are Word-bound to their Tethers. Jubal was Worded to the Plum Street Tether only days after it was created, hoping to use the binding to guard it better. Unfortunately, no one was able to foresee the events that would cause the Tether to come crumbling less than a decade after its stabilization. Now, the Virtue is fading and attempt after attempt to revitalize it only enable him to hold on. To passers-by he looks like an aged hippie–friendly, with a lot of stories, but with a combination of sadness and desperation behind his eyes.

Kendra, Seraph of The Sword, Seneschal of Assumption Grotto Catholic Church
The Seraph Seneschal is well aware of what took place at the first Tether to The Sword in Detroit and swore to never let it happen to Assumption Grotto. The church is not only one of the primary Tethers for the Host’s War faction, but also is a community supporter and a great force for good in the human realms. Kendra doesn’t take kindly to angels who lead demons to her doorstep, but will strike any diabolicals down (with great vengeance) if the threaten the sanctity of the Tether.

Kit, Angel of Motown, Ofanite of Creation
Kit’s been in Detroit since the late 1800’s, listening to musicians and encouraging their musical creativity. In the early 1960’s she was working with Hitsville USA as a soundboard engineer and background singer. Listening to the developing “Motown sound” she was inspired in a way she had never been before and petitioned for the Word of Motown, partially by suggestion from her Superior. Eli had only left Heaven three years prior and was not yet under investigation by the Archangel of Judgment. As such, she was able to receive the Word easily. Though she occasionally leaves Detroit, Kit always returns to Motown proper, both to offer other angels a hand where needed and also to keep the soul moving.

Lael, Ofanite of Flowers, Seneschal of Cranbrook Gardens
Chief gardener and Seneschal of Cranbrook Gardens, Novalis’s strongest Tether in the Detroit Metro area, Lael is always happy to host a meeting of the Host at his post. The Wheel is as quick with a warmhearted response as he is with an alternative, less violent suggestion towards solving a problem. He won’t let the manor house or its forty acres of gardens be despoiled by evil, though. Demons trying to infiltrate the Tether with false claims of redemption will be dealt with just as swiftly as the Ofanite can move from one end of the garden to the other (which is very swift, indeed).

Rrrogh, Malakite of Animals, Seneschal of Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge
Seneschal of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, Rrrogh does everything in his power to keep the Tether healthy and, where possible, growing–even if that means adopting a human form and playing politics. The Refuge is not always easy to access, and the Virtue tries to make sure that any causes the angel is bringing to him also further the cause of Animals. If the angel brings a demon (or demons) to his doorstep, he’ll do everything in his power to send them to Trauma or, even better, oblivion. If successful in taking down the diabolicals, the Malakite won’t complain too much.

Reuben Reyes, Saint of Judgment
Reuben Reyes is a Saint reborn into this human world. Fathered by a Soldier of God and raised in deep Catholic traditions, Reuben volunteered to come to Detroit while it was still more a stronghold for Hell than Heaven. He became an assistant to the District Attorney in the late 1980’s. Now, in his late-40’s, he is a high ranking member of the D.A.’s Civil Division league of attorneys. In this position he’s also able to watch for any Infernal influence or undue angelic intervention. He reports most of this back to Dominic via various forms of communication and also attends Mass in Assumption Grotto Catholic Church twice a week.

Shamshiel, Angel of Daylight, Elohite Master of Revelation
One of Litheroy’s strongest angels, Shamshiel has made Detroit her primary base of operations for the past three years, shining her light into the darkness of mysteries that the Detroit Metro area holds and assisting angels bring Daylight and hope back to Detroit. A powerful warrior and an even more enthusiastic explorer, the Elohite will assist almost any angel, seeking to bring the dankest of Detroit’s mysteries into the light.

Thaddeus, Mercurian of Lightning, Seneschal of The Henry Ford
The Mercurian Seneschal of The Henry Ford museum is amiable and affable, but takes little direct action in the War unless pressed. He views his Tether as more a place to inspire human invention and tithe Essence to Heaven, not for mundane tasks like transportation of angels to Heaven and back. Most angels not directly on his itinerary sheet who seek more than a tour of the museum, will at least have to listen to a lecture on the industrious nature of Henry Ford, and humanity in general, before making use of any of the Tether’s services.

Demonic

Angela, Balseraph Laboratory Director of Technology
This Vapulan Laboratory Director makes her home in Detroit. Amongst her duties, she is investigating the nature of Tethers. Her total number of projects, however, are many and varied. She may assist other demons with gadgets or advice, but it’s also just as likely that demons who land on her doorstep will be put to work or–if it doesn’t seem like they’ll be missed–used in one of her experiments.

Bagdal, Impudite of Fate, Seneschal of Michigan UFOs Organization
Having taken the Role of Ted Burgley, the Impudite Seneschal of Michigan UFOs Organization spends most of his time on the Internet or running UFO meetings (and getting a little Essence himself from visitors). His time is spent keeping the Tether to Fate both strong and well-hidden. Infernal guests are not generally approved of, but Bagdal will provide shelter or transport downward in the most dire of cases.

Della, Djinn of Factions, Seneschal of Hobby Bar
As well as manager and head bartender at Hobby Bar, Della is also Seneschal of the Tether that has focused on the location. She will typically allow demons to use the bar as a meeting place, so long as they don’t get too noisy. Rowdy, sure, just don’t make the Symphony jangle too much. It also might be a bad idea to ask her about the best glass for a type of beer unless one has an excuse to leave as the Djinn can wax rhapsodic on the topic for hours.

Joy, Habbalah of Greed, Seneschal of MotorCity Casino
Joy loves her job as Seneschal, testing who is strong enough to escape the debt that too much greed can eventually bring. Her duties leave her little time for interaction with the rest of Detroit’s Infernal “community” but she does keep a couple rooms available for The Horde–so long as they’re willing to pay her price.

Kafkefoni, Shedite of The Game, Seneschal of Saint Anne’s Church
The Corrupter is, quite possibly, one of the most powerful demons in Detroit. With the number of attacks and reclamation attempts on the stolen Tether he has to be. He always has work for other demons and little patience for those who come to him for help. Any assistance requested of the Tether will usually result in a redirection to one of Detroit’s other demons.

Lucrecia, Lilim of Theft, Seneschal of 152nd Street Warehouse
Lucrecia is far more reserved and private than most of her sister Lilim. While fellow demons of Theft may use the Tether for only minor trinkets, other demons will have to pay a (sometimes steep) price to make use of the services she provides.

Maiphiat, Calabite of Fire, Demon of Devil’s Night, Seneschal of Berberen Party Store
When he gained the position of Seneschal to Berberen Party Store, the Calabite asked not to be Word-bound to his position. Instead, Maiphiat lured the original holder of the Word of Devil’s Night to his location and destroyed the other demon. Maiphiat is ruthless, cunning and powerful. He enjoys his position of power and views other demons who need to use the Tether he’s assigned to as additional proof and potential uses of his power. The Calabite runs a gang of imps, a few Soldiers and a number of humans unaware of his true nature. Through these thugs he both defends the dilapidated area that his Tether touches and helps keep his Word strong.

Morrthis “Dutch Maury”, Demon of Syrup, Impudite Knight of Gluttony
Morrthis or, as he’s been known for the past 60 years, Dutch Maury is a friendly Impudite Knight of Gluttony who spends a lot of his time in the Detroit Metro area, promoting and enjoying his Word: Syrup. He tends to only concentrate on the sap-based breakfast topping and, as such, is seen as unimportant to both angels and demons alike. While it’s rare for a member of the Host to sit down and share breakfast with the Taker, it’s not been unknown to happen. Demons rarely include him in their plans (how many plans involve maple syrup?), but the friendlier members of the Horde will often speak pleasantly of the simple-minded Glutton. Maury seems to know almost everyone in Detroit and is a mutual acquaintance with at least half of the celestial population–regardless what side of The War they’re on.

Detective Ray Evans, Soldier of The Game
Once nothing more than a beat cop with a life heading towards the toilet, Ray Evans made a deal with the devil–well, a demon, at least–to improve his situation. Now he’s a mostly-respected homicide detective with a nice place and a new girl every week. He’s still pretty miserable, though. For one, he’s been let in on the secret of The War and, even worse, he’s been told to watch for suspicious activity amongst demons! Ray’s position in the force gives him an eye on a lot of the street happenings and he regularly reports to Asmodeus. Most demons consider him a nuisance–especially since he won’t help them hide the bodies.

Rose, Lilim of Media
“Glad I could help caller. And remember, you owe me one!” Rose MacLye is one of the most popular talk radio hosts in the Detroit Metro area, and has a number of fans in Windsor as well. Dispensing invaluable advice to the love-struck, guilt-wracked and just plain lonely, she’s been able to place tiny hooks in a number of people. She also keeps people focused on their radios, instead of what they should be doing (driving, working, whatever). Rose is young, but believes she’s on the fast track to a distinction or two from Nybbas. She’ll often work with Media or Media-allied demons just further prove her worth to her Prince.

Sam, Balseraph of Drugs, Seneschal of Kercheval Korner Store
The Seneschal of Fleurty’s strongest Tether in Detroit has been known as Sam for so long that few even remember if it’s his True Name or not (it’s not). Outwardly easy-going and friendly, the Balseraph is a contact for many of Detroit’s Infernal residents and has even begun the drug trade back up in the former convenience store/crack haven of the Chamber Brothers Gang. The Tether isn’t large, by any measuring standards, and Sam does try to keep a low profile. The Seneschal doesn’t take kindly to loud noises near his place.

Virdriv, Djinn Captain of The War
A newcomer to Detroit, Virdriv is one of Baal’s chief advance scouts. Where the Hound of Hell and his motorcycle gang goes, a battle often follows. Virdriv is brutal and cunning and the imps that serve him usually come home battered and bruised by their own captain–but for any scrot, it’s a chance to earn recognition even before fledging. Detroit’s Tether ability and the recent loss of many potential Tethers to the Host has piqued Baal’s interest. Virdriv has come to Detroit to determine if the War should be fought here more forcefully. While he’s not had a chance to meet with most of Detroit’s demons, sooner or later, he’ll see how both they and the angels are positioned.

Wrenchial, Demon of Amps, Calabite Baron of Hardcore
Former servitor of Fire, the Calabite earned Belial’s ire by helping raise a fellow demon into one of Hell’s newest Princes. Now Wrenchial serves Furfur, Demon Prince of Hardcore in one of the Prince’s highest positions. Slightly less than a year ago the Demon of Amps came to Detroit and, while he gets along with a number of Motor City’s demons, many wonder what his schemes he has planned for this city.

Ethereal

The Nain Rouge
This redcap-like creature has been an omen of misfortune since white man came to the territory. Though neither powerful nor extremely prevalent on the corporeal realm, the Ethereal does make his home in Detroit, vying for any stray bits of Essence he can gain from the populous. Rumors have it that he has made deals with Beleth for her brand of “protection” and is considered a tool for the using by any visiting demons of Nightmare.

The Snake Goddess of Belle Isle
From an old Native American arose the Snake Goddess of Belle Isle. Despite her name, she is neither a goddess, nor does she have anything to do with snakes. This beautiful Ethereal woman also sometimes appears as a white faun deep in the heart of Detroit’s Belle Isle (which was once home to a great number of snakes). Her Ethereal Tether is actually Detroit’s oldest Tether still in existence and she has formed uneasy treaties with both Dreams and Nightmares to keep her small Tether from being targeted, treaties which would surely be broken if they learned of her recent activities, serving as an object of worship from dilettantes and actual Native Americans, strengthening both the Snake Goddess and her Tether.
